How to Strikethrough Text on Discord: Formatting vs Copy and Paste

In brief

To strikethrough a Discord chat message, put two tildes before and after the text: ~~Friday meetup~~. Use native message formatting first. A Unicode strikethrough generator creates a different string with overlay marks; it is not Discord Markdown.

Copy the native Discord syntax

~~Friday meetup~~

Copy the whole line, including the two tildes on each side. Replace Friday meetup with the part of your own message that should be crossed out. Do not substitute hyphens or a long dash for the tilde character.

  1. Open the conversation where you intend to write. Use an ordinary chat message, not a profile or name field.
  2. Place ~~ immediately before the target words and another ~~ immediately after them.
  3. For a correction, write the replacement outside those markers so the update remains ordinary text.
  4. Send only when you are ready, then check the displayed message. Use a private test conversation if you are only practicing.

Discord’s Markdown guide explicitly documents double tildes for strikethrough in chat. It also documents double asterisks for bold, single asterisks for italics, and double underscores for underline. Discord: Markdown Text 101 (Chat Formatting: Bold, Italic, Underline)

Make corrections understandable without the line

~~Friday meetup~~ Updated: Saturday meetup.

In this original example, Friday meetup is the old wording and Saturday meetup is the replacement. The word Updated carries the meaning of the correction; readers should not have to infer it solely from a visual line. Add the actual date and time when making a real announcement instead of relying only on a weekday.

Updated: Saturday meetup (previously Friday).

Use the plain version when the styling is unnecessary or difficult to read. For a consequential change, prefer a clear updated message over a joke that crosses out the only useful information.

If you see the tildes instead of a strikethrough

Correct markers: ~~Friday meetup~~
Wrong markers: --Friday meetup--
Incomplete pair: ~~Friday meetup~
  • Compare the literal characters with the correct example. Check both the opening and closing pairs.
  • Try the minimal example in a normal message before adding bold, links, mentions or other formatting.
  • Check whether you surrounded the sample with backticks. Remove the code formatting when your goal is a styled message rather than a syntax demonstration.
  • Confirm that you are in chat. Do not assume a profile, nickname or other field parses the same syntax.
  • If a minimal normal message still fails, note the app version and the exact string you entered before seeking help.

Discord documents backticks as code-block syntax. The formatting reference concerns chat; it is not a promise that every text field accepts the same Markdown. Discord: Markdown Text 101 (Chat Formatting: Bold, Italic, Underline)

How Unicode copy-and-paste strikethrough differs

F̶r̶i̶d̶a̶y̶ m̶e̶e̶t̶u̶p̶

This locally generated specimen inserts an overlay mark after each letter. It contains no tilde wrapper to remove. If you later want ordinary text, replace it from the original rather than expecting a Discord formatting toggle to undo the generated characters.

MethodWhat you prepareRecommended use here
Discord MarkdownOrdinary words surrounded by ~~First choice for a normal Discord chat message
Unicode overlayLetters with added combining marksA separate experiment where native formatting is unavailable
Plain correctionExplicit old and new wordingWhen the meaning matters more than the visual effect

Unicode distinguishes character coverage problems from shaping problems, including misplaced marks. For an overlay effect, check the actual displayed result rather than assuming the line will align in every font or application. Unicode: Display Problems?

If you specifically need the character-based alternative, try the strikethrough text generator. Keep it to a short phrase and retain an unmarked copy.

For other decorative character styles, browse the Discord font generator. Use Discord’s native message formatting when that already provides the effect you need.

Frequently asked questions

What do I type for strikethrough on Discord?

Use two tildes on each side of the text, for example ~~Friday meetup~~. This is the chat syntax documented by Discord.

Is a strikethrough generator required?

Not for the normal chat case covered here. Discord already documents native strikethrough syntax. The generator is a separate character-based method, not a prerequisite.

Can I assume the same syntax works in my nickname?

No. This guide and its cited formatting documentation concern chat messages. Check the specific field rather than assuming its text processing matches chat.

How do I remove a Unicode strikethrough?

Replace the marked string with the plain original. The generated example includes combining marks within the text; deleting a pair of tildes will not remove those marks.
